Questions About Therapy:

Is therapy only for people with serious mental illness?
spacer
No. That is a myth. Therapy services offer a continuum of mental health services. It is true that some people with serious mental illnesses may need longer and more comprehensive psychiatric services, including medication and hospitalization. However, those people represent only a small percentage of the population receiving mental health services today.

Most clients come to therapy for resolution of temporary mental health problems like confusion, depression, anxiety, and relationship problems. They are seeking better ways to manage their stress, cope with their problems, and not repeat the painful experiences of their past. People want to make positive changes in their lives, be more productive, improve their relationships, increase their self-esteem and confidence, and increase their personal judgment, insight, and growth.

Therapy is not about creating a dependence on the therapist for problem solving. Instead, its purpose and value is to help clients learn to recognize, develop and use their own personal strengths to resolve their problems.

How will I know when I should seek therapy?

Everyone experiences occasional life difficulties that are usually temporary and self-manageable. However, when these difficulties become overwhelming and result in serious impairment in relational, occupational, or social functioning, it is time to contact a therapist with the appropriate education and training to help people with problem resolution. A therapist will help you understand the roots and nature of your difficulties and will assist you in developing the insight and personal strengths you will need to resolve them.

How will I know when I am ready for therapy?

You are ready for therapy if you are willing to make and maintain a commitment to your own personal growth. Therapy may be difficult and complex. The challenge of therapy may be rewarding and, at times, demanding. I look forward to helping you meet this challenge and achieve your goals for personal growth.
